The big thing that happened in these chapters was Estella's realization of her own despicable attitude. She acknowledges the fact that she was brought up to be a heartless witch and can't love anyone. She realizes this when they make what seems to be their final visit to Miss Havisham. The old crone still plays with Estella like a doll and she just snaps.
From this point, Estella will probably end up pretending to be happy with Drummle, but not REALLY love him, break his heart, thus destroying his life, and then attempting to live her life like nothing ever happened and possibly try to, and fail, at being happy with Pip. Estella is destined to live a life of torment. She was raised to live no other way.

I do agree that Miss Havisham is a heartless witch, but she does love Estella. Her heart was crushed by Magwich's ememy Compeyson. I believe that Estella is not destined to torment, Miss Havisham tried to make that her destiny. But Estella does truly have a heart. We see this when she finally stands up to Miss Havisham and tells her that she has made Estella into a heartless heart breaker. But I believe that Dickens makes it quite unknown what Estella's intentions are for marrying Drummle. But I do not believe that Estella and Pip were meant to be together. Or this could be another trial for Pip, its like he needs to do more to wins Estella's affection.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with you Rich, about Estella not being destined to torment. Ms. Havisham has raised Estella to wreak havoc on all mankind, so she is destined to torment. In addition, just because Estella stands up does not mean she has a heart. This could just mean, she understands that she is cruel and tormenting. But how she was raised she will still torment.
